According to the CHNA study, the Aroostook region lung cancer mortality/incidence ratio for males is higher than any other region.
Are there any initiatives currently taking place to decrease smoking rates? If so, what are some of the barriers and successes identified/experienced?

Northern Maine Medical Center was recently the recipiant of a grant from the Center for Tobacco Independance. We have spent the last 6 months assessing a systems approach to tobacco cessation efforts. Changes have been made to address the needs of our patients to improve efficiency and to improve the promotion of tobacco cessation resources.

With the new district tobacco coordinator we have been able to partner on strategies for example smoke-free housing and parks and rec to implement policies and education. Our tobacco coordinator has been a great assest to our region. We will continue to work hard in this area and from reports such as the CHNA report, see progress towards tobacco reduction and related chronic disease.
